Kushmanda Aarti is a Hindu ceremonial worship or devotional rite devoted to the goddess Kushmanda, who is said to represent the goddess Durga’s fourth appearance. This Aarti is done during the Navratri festival, a nine-day celebration honouring Shakti, the divine feminine spirit.
Kushmanda is a combination of three words: ‘Ku’ means ‘a little,’ ‘Ushma’ means ‘warmth or energy,’ and ‘anda’ means ‘cosmic egg.’ As a result, Kushmanda is revered as the creator of the cosmos and is connected with vigour and energy. According to Hindu legend, Goddess Kushmanda lived in the sun, hence her skin is golden or brilliant like the sun.
The Kushmanda Aarti is conducted in the evening after sunset, and it includes the goddess Kushmanda being offered light, flowers, and incense. The Aarti is conducted by reciting hymns and praying to the goddess in order to get her blessings for wealth, good health, and happiness.
The Aarti starts with a bell ringing, followed by the lighting of a lamp or diya and the singing of mantras. Devotees present flowers, fruits, and sweets to the goddess, and the priest performs the Kushmanda Aarti in her honour. The Aarti is done with dedication and thanks to the goddess, and it is said to provide beneficial energy and blessings to the devotees.
