Storytelling
Barbie and Ken travel to the real world in search of purpose. The new trailer for the summer film was released on Thursday, giving us our finest look yet at Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, Will Ferrell as a Mattel executive, and the numerous atrocities that the real world has in store for two lifelong objects.
The trailer begins in the same manner as the previous teaser, with Barbie and Ken strolling through their ideal, pink-filled world. When a sudden realisation of her own mortality strikes Robbie’s Barbie, she meets an eccentric Barbie portrayed by Kate McKinnon who sends her on a voyage to discover the real world and what exists beyond her high-heeled dominion. Ken naturally follows along.
From there, the trailer provides numerous jokes about Barbie and Ken interacting with the real world, their fashion sense, their arrests, and their inability to comprehend that they are no longer universally adored. Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbies, appears to be concerned about their absence, as they appear determined to have Robbie’s and Gosling’s characters return to Barbie World promptly.
The Barbie film is scheduled to hit theatres on July 21.
